Golf Australia Express : Issue 26
HE’S A PIONEER OF GOLF FASHION, AN ENIGMA OF SORTS, AND A HELLUVA GOLFER. HERE’S AN OTG BIRTHDAY WISH TO ONE OF GOLF’S MOST COLOURFUL CHARACTERS. JESPER PARNEVIK BORN MARCH 7, 1965 THE COURSE JESPER LIST THE BEFORE IJP there was JP. Jesper Parnevik. The flamboyant Swede was one of golf’s great entertainers during the 1990s and early 2000s. Known more for his distinctive and eccentric taste in clothes and fashion than his impressive achievements, Parnevik turns 47 today (unless you’re reading post Wednesday, of course). With a trademark up- turned peek, he certainly showed he was an individual out there. While his fashion statements didn’t really catch on,that’s just how Jesper would’ve wanted it. Then there’s those disco- style purple trousers, or wearing a necktie under a vest. It’s no wonder Parnevik earned the nickname ‘Spaceman’ on Tour. Off the course Parnevik was no less distinctive, introducing Tiger Woods to Elin Nordegren back in the day. And in 2007, Parnevik—the son of famous Swedish comedian Bo Parnevik—even had a cameo role in the totally forgettable comedy film Who’s Your Caddy? But aside from his amusing style and occasional off- the-planet personality, this unconventional character could seriously play golf. Between 1998 and 2001, the three-time Ryder Cupper won five PGA and four European titles. He spent 38 weeks inside the world’s top 10, posting a highest ranking of 7. He had seven top 10s in majors, including a2ndandT2atthe1994 and 1997 British Open Championships. Unfortunately, Parnevik’s career has been dogged by injuries. In 2009 he underwent hip surgery and the following year had emergency surgery when it was discovered he had a broken lumbar vertebrae. Happy birthday Jesper. Let’s hope you’re back playing great golf again soon. We miss you old boy! OTG By Sam Gole
