Golf Australia Express : Issue 3
Yet World No.1 and downright superstar Yani Tseng will be looking to add another win to what has been an impressive year. But snapping at her heels will be world numbers 2 and 3—Cristie Kerr and Suzann Pettersen respectively. The former is in fine touch having finished third at the US Women’s Open despite weather disruptions, and has made it clear in pre- tournament interviews that she’s rather keen to add an Evian Masters to her list of 18 professional wins. But if forced at gunpoint to make a call, we’re leaning towards Pettersen. The big-hitting Norwegian seems made for the Evian course, and she’s been thereabouts in nearly every event since her Sybase Classic win in May. Norway? Yes way. OTG THE PLAYERS Glamorous Russian LET player, Maria Verchenova, is very much the face of the tournament, earning a sponsor’s wildcard entry for the last few year’s. In 2007, she became the first Russian to gain full status on the LET. The the 25-year- old continues to turn heads on the course, as well as off it as a part-time model. Booyeah. Please win Maria! WHO TO WATCH THIS WEEKEND Yet to secure a 2011 win, Korea’s Jiyai Shin goes into the Evian Masters following a string of inconsistent performances. But count this pocket-rocket out at your peril. The way we see it, the former world No.1 is due for a win, and she’s already shown she can get around Evian-les-Bains better than the rest. While unlikely to go in as a favourite, she’s certainly worth a little splash. THE HOPEFULS SPONSOR’S PICK THE DEFENDER PEEK THE “If I’m wearing sexier, more stylish stuff like a shorter skirt or a nice tennis-style dress and people notice then great.” — Maria Verchenova, sponsor’s invite
